Unpleasant Gradient, or simply just Unpleasant, is an NPC that can be found in-game and will enter the elevator.

Appearance

Unpleasant appears as a thin rectangle with a gradient consisting of the colors green, pink, and light brown.

Unpleasant's gradient can be changed using the Scrub Father. However, their gradient will still look unpleasant.

During 2024 April Ghouls' Update, Unpleasant was retextured to a stretched image of a Chick-Fil-A order.

During the 2024 Halloween Update, Unpleasant was reshaped and retextured to resemble the Pokémon MissingNo.

Description

Unpleasant does not speak and seemingly does not react to other characters. Many elevator NPCs in the game find them too unpleasant to even be near, and NPCs will usually make insults or death threats towards them. Some NPCs may specifically mention negative experiences with Unpleasant, such as Infected bringing up that his pet cat p0pt4rt went missing after being left alone with Unpleasant or that Unpleasant snapped his skateboard in half, and Reddy stating that Unpleasant is banned from Red Ball Diner for an unspecified reason. NPCs will often comment on Unpleasant staring at them in a creepy way despite their lack of eyes or a face. They will also usually point out that Unpleasant smells extremely bad.

Interactions

Unpleasant has a random chance to come out from Infected's room in the Infected Apartment floor and slowly walk to the elevator. Once it enters the elevator, the SpongeBob "boowomp" sound effect will play. If the elevator is full or MR is in the elevator, Unpleasant will become unanchored and fall over.

If Mozelle is in the elevator with Unpleasant, she may interact with Unpleasant and kill them.

Unpleasant will refuse most items given to them except for Wet Cement and Magic Mirror. Unpleasant will also accept kitties, which it will eat and heal to full health immediately. Unlike Infected, Unpleasant is able to accept more than one cat.

Unpleasant will leave the elevator on the Underground Subway, Skyblock, Tumblr Ballpit, Slide 4 Admin, Turret, Mozelle's Humble Castle, Jermpop Factory, Happy Home Party, Funny Maze, Infected Apartment and Backrooms floors.

• Unpleasant is one of two NPCs who have Kitty interactions.
  • The other is Infected, who holds the kitty.
• It is possible to instantly kill Unpleasant using the Bowling Ball if they are under the Glassed! effect.
• Unpleasant is currently the only NPC with an invisible chat bubble.
• Unpleasant had 1 UGC accessory, this being the "Unpleasant Gradient Skateboard". It also is a reference to Infected as he speaks about skating often.
  • However, this item is currently off-sale.
• When the elevator arrives at The Subway floor, Unpleasant will lay on the track until the train passes. Afterwards, they will jump up and walk down the railroad for the remainder of the floor.
  • It is the only NPC who leaves on the floor and doesn't die in the process.
  • Although there is a chance they don’t lay down, and get hit by the train.
• Unpleasant's dialogue for leaving the elevator used to be "I'm leaving!".
  • This was the only occurrence where Unpleasant says something instead of "..."
  • It was also a mistake on the developers' end, likely due to Unpleasant being canonically mute, and/or "I'm leaving!" being a default dialogue for NPCs, seeing as Jermbo also has it.
• Players are able to get the "WORST BADGE EVER" badge by meeting Unpleasant for the first time.
• Unpleasant's render on the official Axolotl Sun Twitter account has broken transparency, with the reasoning being that Unpleasant deserves it.
• If a player's game is still loading, Unpleasant will appear as a red rectangle.
  • The reasoning for Unpleasant being red could be due to how their texturing may work.
